Our vision for food

Vision

The Trust has developed a vision regarding food and drink. All Trust services relating to food and drink, the supporting education and promotional activities are measured against this.

The Trust is committed to:

  • Creating a retail environment to encourage staff and visitors to select healthier food items by either choice or awareness.
  • Increasing interaction between patients to increase; motivation, morale, aid to healing and improved nutrition, keeping patients mobile and improved overall dining experience.
  • Support the patients at meal times by encouraging them to eat their meals and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with a volunteer for company.
  • Minimising the food waste and reducing single use plastic.

Strategy

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust’s Food and Drink Strategy covering nutritional care, healthy eating and sustainable food provision has been developed using the recommendations of the Hospital Food Standards Panel 2014. This referenced five required national standards that must be met:

  • BAPEN: Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool
  • British Dietetic Association: Nutrition and Hydration Digest: Improving Outcomes through Food and Beverage Services
  • NHS England: 10 Key Characteristics of Good Nutritional Care
  • Public Health England: Healthier and More Sustainable Catering: Nutrition Principles
  • Public Health England: Government Buying Standard for Food and Catering Services.

Nutrition and Hydration are widely recognized as medicine in the overall treatment for patients supporting wellbeing and recovery. We provide meals across a 3 week menu cycle, with additional a la carte menus with special dietary requirements including Modified Texture, Allergen-free, Cultural (including Halal), Vegan and Finger Food, Low Residue and No Added Salt. Menus are reviewed twice a year and are planned, designed and dietary coded by the ISS Specialist Food Service Dietitians. Modified Texture meals are tested and approved for safety by our supplier’s Speech and Language Therapist.

Menus are coded to provide guidance relevant to the diet and for those patients with multiple dietary restrictions i.e. higher energy, healthier eating, easy to chew, gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and lower potassium. Menu reviews take into account extensive food tasting, patient feedback, dietary considerations and include both modern and traditional hot meals, seasonal options and dessert choices with an emphasis on increasing our plant based and lower carbon options.

We provide access to a Nutrition and Allergen Portal via a QR code on the menus giving live nutrition, allergen and ingredient information for our meals. This is available to patients, relatives and staff to help give more control over decisions over their own health and wellbeing and supports personalised menu choices.
