Orthotics

The Orthotics Team provide gait analysis and engineering solutions for adults and children with a range of neurological, muscular, and skeletal conditions.

We prescribe orthoses which are devices, such as braces or splints, used to correct, accommodate or maintain good positioning of the muscles, bones and joints to improve function or reduce pain.

Orthotists can treat a wide range of conditions including:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, spina bifida
  • Function loss after trauma
  • Cancer and pathologies

Referral process and contact information

Patients will need to be referred by their Consultant, their GP or a registered Health Care Professional in writing and emailed to orthotics@swft.nhs.uk

Advice for referrers

Please give as much detail as possible regarding your patient’s diagnosis and reason for referral.

Unless footwear is required to accommodate significant deformity or protect High Risk Feet, referrals will be redirected to the Podiatry Footwear Advice Clinic.

Appointment information

Attending your appointment

  • Check your appointment letter for the location as we work across different sites. It may be a different location from previous appointments.
  • You may bring a relative or friend to the appointment with you.
  • If you have had any Orthosis previously, please bring it to your appointment, which will assist in your assessment.
  • Bring your usual walking and standing aids (walking stick, crutches, Kaye walker). We will need to assess your mobility and may ask you to walk.
  • Bring a spare pair of fastening shoes to your appointment, if you think your current shoes may need adapting.

What happens at my appointment?

  • You will see an Orthotist, who will assess and discuss your current needs and agree a treatment plan.
  • The clinician may take some measurements or casts (you may need to partially undress for this).
  • Items may need to be ordered – some items could take up to 12 weeks.
  • A further fitting appointment maybe required to fit and advise on use.

Repairs

  • Orthotic devices and footwear will require repairs and maintenance.
  • Please contact the department to book a drop-off appointment. Telephone: 01926 600818 Option 4.
